Rock Climbing

Successful participants will have the opportunity to obtain Professional Climbing Instructors Association: Climbing Wall Instructor and Single Pitch Instructor certifications, which allows for entry-level employment as a rock climbing guide, professional route setter or climbing gym management.

Part-time TAP for non-degree programs eligibility

This microcredential course is eligible to have the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) for non-degree programs grant cover a portion of the cost of tuition, as long as you are economically eligible as follows and meet other requirements, including:

  • $80,000 for dependent undergraduate students, independent students who are married and have tax dependents, or independent students who are unmarried and have tax dependents
  • $40,000 for married independent undergraduate students who have no other dependents
  • $10,000 for unmarried independent undergraduate students with no dependents

If you believe you earn less than the amount listed in the criteria above, you should apply by completing the FAFSA and TAP applications. Please note you have a lifetime of eight semesters of TAP. These will be prorated for the number of credits you earn, but will use a portion of your lifetime TAP eligibility.

Rock Climbing Certification

This microcredential also provides supplemental knowledge for those with careers in other industries, including forestry, telecommunications and adventure programming, among others.

The following courses are required:

  • PED 165 Rock Climbing I
  • PED 166 Rock Climbing II
  • AVS 265 Rock Climbing Guiding and Instruction
  • 2.0 combined GPA

 

This microcredential:

  • Comprises 5 credits;
  • Is able to be completed in two semesters;
  • Costs $222 per credit, for a total of $1,060, plus textbooks and college fees;
  • Advance standing available for those with prior climbing experience
